The Economic Significance of the Straits of Hormuz

Mark Hankey, Marketing Director of Lloyd’s MIU presented a paper on the economic significance of the Straits of Hormuz at the Royal United Services Institute last Friday (14th December 2007).
Over 800 million tonnes or 33% of the world’s total seaborne crude oil flows through this twenty one mile wide channel annually, making it an area of immense strategic influence.
The event, titled “Security and the Strait of Hormuz: Challenges and Implications” was attended by a senior figures from the world of shipping, energy and defence.
