PRESS RELEASE

Casablanca is the 1000th port to be covered by Lloyd’s MIU’s world leading global network of AIS receivers.

Uniquely, the Lloyd’s Agency Network provides Lloyd’s MIU with human confirmation of vessel movements across all 18,593 of the world’s commercially active ports, terminals and berths, and the global merchant fleet of 90,000 vessels.

The exclusive fusion of human intelligence with 45 million daily AIS positions enabled Lloyd’s MIU to be the first organisation to locate the controversial Zimbabwean arms ship (An Yue Jiang) in April as reported in the press.

Julio Espin, Lloyd’s MIU Managing Director, said “Our AIS network captures 1.3 billion real-time ship positions a month on 66,000 AIS transmitting vessels, and is growing at a phenomenal rate. Though this is the biggest global AIS network, we continue asking Lloyd’s Agents to provide movements for every port, as our customers prefer AIS data to be corroborated, and also this human network is the only way to track the 24,000 vessels of the global merchant fleet that don’t transmit AIS or which pass a port which has not yet been fitted with a Lloyd’s MIU AIS receiver.”
